I am selling Ashe. It was a long and hard thought out decision, but ultimately it has come to that.

The past six months to a year have been hard on both of us.

The migraines with vertigo (which have stopped now that I'm no longer at the work building) which led to him sitting in a field, the losing my job over a stupid paperwork mistake created by my doctor's office to get accommodation for said migraines with vertigo, the past four months of being on nothing (not even unemployment) and the love of my housemates (Bless them ALL), and the realization that with Ashe and horse ownership in general I wasn't getting where I wanted to go in a number of areas in my life.

That said I don't regret buying him. I love him dearly and he's been awesome, every day is getting better with dressage contact (for both of us), fitness and finesse. I'm just hoping I can find him a good home.

Lots of people say that they will keep a horse forever. It's a nice thought, but it isn't realistic. I've come to the realization that a good horse owner keeps their horse through the times, but the best horse owners know when to say "I can't provide the best home anymore, I'm going to find the right spot for you."

Do I feel guilty? Completely. But I keep reassuring myself that it's the right thing to do at this point in my life. Between my budget being cut to less than half of what I had before, the lack of desire to go to the barn, and just wanting to start saving up to travel, buy a house, etc, horse ownership no longer has a spot, and it's not fair to Ashe, who prefers having a job, to sit in a field until I MAY feel like picking up all the intricacies of owning.

So yeah. This blog will likely end now (Granted I haven't posted in ages due to not riding and everything else). Thanks for reading.

But we had our first lesson in months. Started out as a butt, but in the end he was really really good.

Trainer agreed that it's not his head we're concerned about with steering/stopping, but that he's blocking the contact with his poll, neck, and shoulders. Go figure.

Additionally a bit of news, the original boarding place I had been at is accepting Ashe back :) He's the only boarder they're agreeing to take back but I'm best pleased as it means I'll have an indoor for the winter! Woohoo!

Asking for Jingles because my trainer may have found a farm to buy! Which means I'll actually be able to board and ride with all my barn buddies instead of paying for trailering every time I want! Woohoo too!

No news on the migraines/vertigo. Been having jaw ache and ear issues the past three days even on the prednisone and nasonex so that combination is a no go. Back to the drawing board for the ENT and allergist.
BitsSo pretty much since the XC outing I've been grounded. As in, can't ride due to the migraines I've been having. Plus I had a week of 12 hour days at work (stupid health benefit changes in HR)

ENT doctor says there is nothing wrong to indicate why I might be having it other than some inflammation. Says I should def go with the allergist's plan for allergy shots (my budget is crying already).

That said, we DID get out for the halloween fun show at my trainers:

Bucket Roulette: Leaping buckets like they're 2'3 - We got to 1 bucket!

At the show I noticed he's starting to exhibit the same signs he did with the rubber mullens we were using early on before moving to the KK Ultra (gaping mouth, blocking shoulder/neck, steam training, refusing to take up contact). I had been meaning to do more research into bits for a while now since the dentist mentioned that he has a very small sensitive mouth.

Realized he has a VERY thick tongue and almost no curve to his palate. *sigh* So while the KK Ultra has been good (and he's really good on a looser rein with it) it might be the reason we've keep hitting a brick wall with steady contact and evasion on his side.

So I made a leap and am going to try the wide barrel comfort snaffle in eggbutt from Myler (I'd go D-ring but they are HUGE on his tiny nose). Trainer approves the attempt. Should be shipping shortly, fingers crossed!

Thankfully the migraines seems to have settled as allergies have died down and I have a two week vacation coming up so perfect time to try it out! Fingers crossed!
Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-67202438097653180912016-09-08T17:33:00.000-07:002016-09-08T17:33:12.621-07:00XC Day!!We FINALLY went XC schooling! But it went well, and he ate it up!
I need to work on my release and contact (the ditch jumps he'd stop, look, LEAP) but overall it was a fantastic day!
Ashe has improved again with the hosing. He spooked at it (to be fair his chin got hit when I was getting his front legs from behind), pulled away and then came right back and let me finish everything. WITH the hose head attached rather than just free running water. Woo!

So we went to my trainer's clinic again this year :) 2 days overnight. I wish he'd get along in the field over the fence with her horses but alas, he has to stay stall bound except for supervised free time in the ring. Last year's clinic (clicky!)

We did so much better! We did BN dressage test (I went off course the first time I did it, never done it before in my defense) and then jumped a "Student" designed jump course complete with a "pick your own" derby section! He even jumped his first corner without a second glance (the pipes apparently are optional to him and I have to "wide hand" it to get him to focus).

For dressage we need to work on connection and smoothness. And actually free walking :P

For jumps I need to work on my hands and getting stiff over smaller jumps. He needs to work on getting the correct lead and not diving into the turn off jumps.

Instead of bucking, he tried to roll with me under saddle but I will take it so +1 there!

Also looking at getting a new vest based on our safety discussions and am updating my first aid kit!

All in all it was great. Now for Videos!

Dressage (Round 2, because I forgot where I was going in Round 1)
Also, I would fail because I am so used to using my voice to help him stay focused on me...

We've been riding, a lot of outside hills and interval sets for trot and canter.

We've been working on turns and rollbacks over fences.

All for this moment.

We had our FIRST SHOW. And it was FANTASTIC.

I was thinking he was going to be more like how we are at the fun shows. Full of energy and little brakes....

Well he was the complete opposite. Cool, calm and did have the oomph when I asked, and listened to my half halts.

We had quite a full class for the 18" jumpers and placed 3rd, 5th and 3rd again. We stayed on, remembered all the courses (each class was a different course!) and rode really consistently.
The 5th came about because he cross cantered after a jump and couldn't get himself sorted by the turn and we tripped. He was a little lazy jumping but he doesn't really put in the effort at that height.

On top of it all, we got Reserve Champion for the division!

Then he was feeling so good we did one class of the 2' to 2'3 and the jumper monster in him came out. We placed 3rd then too. Our trainer says that we can do the 2' to 2'3 division next time if we wanted. (We mostly did the 18" as we had no idea how he would be nor how I would be remembering all my courses).

I'm waiting on photos, but overall it was a fantastic and awesome day!

He seemed to settle almost instantly (after the usual prancing, snorting, and showing off for the two other geldings in the fields next to him). The place is nice and I know he'll have good care.

I will have to get used to riding in all kinds of weather as I had to give up the wonderful indoor that we had. I need to get a spring raincoat for riding (all I have that is waterproof are winter jackets).

Beyond that, we're working on how quickly he responds to cues (particularly trot to canter), and changing leads over ground poles. He's doing great so far!

No pictures (Yet). But we'll get some.

No worries! Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-71751614212418864632016-01-28T12:49:00.000-08:002016-01-28T12:49:08.862-08:00Turning The Page...Most people do this around New Years... or maybe Thanksgiving...

But we're coming to a new chapter in our partnership. The current barn we're at is retiring, and therefore we have to find a new place by the end of March. EEK.

I realized how much I adore the place I'm at and the care... and am planning on doing a big Thank You card for the owners. But I'm only a week into searching for a new place, and its difficult!

It also got me realizing just how far in two years we've come as a partnership.

He comes to me when whistled at in the field, he trusts me implicitly, we play together loose in the indoor, and we've gotten over so many of his fears already.

Then I found this, I made it at our 2 year mark... the difference for the both of us is astounding.
I know he appreciates them, and I always dig a little deeper into his personality. It helps us to bond, and heal over the hard training days and mistakes made prior.

Yesterday he was uncharacteristically lazy, even over the jumps. Two days before we had a hard flat lesson with working on raised cavaletti and serpentines. I guess he wasn't out of being stiff/sore yet.

So today, instead of riding despite the gorgeous weather, I set him up with a pile of hay, and took to grooming every inch of him. As it's chilly, I couldn't bathe him despite the accumulation of dust/dirt he seems to always have on him (I should rename him Pigpen!). So I went with a new technique I had read: The Wet Towel/Brush Method.

Now I know the wet towel method. I use it in the winter to keep the deep urine stains from setting too deeply onto him, but we don't have hot water at the barn, and I didn't decide to do a deep groom until I had gotten there.

What this does, is you wet the towel (bonus if you get hot water, it helps keep things clean) and you brush the horse, then the towel, then the horse.... you get the picture. It keeps the brush clean and in turn dampens the brush to encourage the dirt to cling to it. He was near glossy by the time I was done. I did the same with his tail, and then went to town with his nicks he has from rolling on hard ground (Again, Pigpen anyone??)

Then, to top it off, we went on a long meandering trail walk together in halter. He grazed for a bit here and there, and then all of a sudden started pushing his nose through the tall grass where we walked. At first I was confused and then I realized he was purposely getting the grasshoppers to jump.

I knew they had fascinated him from when we'd ride outside before, his head at his knees jumping overtime they hit him in the face and then he'd put it right back down again. This just had me laughing so hard at the spectacle of him doing it (I wish I had had a camera on me at the time).

By the end we both were relaxed, he was moving much more loosely and we both had a wonderful morning. It reminded me why I love horses, and my boy in general.

So remember to go appreciate your four legged partners and all they do!

Until Next Time. No worries!Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-19927738772360113212015-10-12T12:22:00.002-07:002015-10-12T12:22:50.811-07:00Life Rushes BySo I've been negligent in keeping up this log of our progress... Life got hectic for a while with moving, my old car breaking down (and me needing a new one), errors in my student loans causing mass panic in what I owe month to month... Thankfully that all has settled down.

A quick review of the past few months!

1. Clinic:

I realized I never updated from the clinic! Unfortunately we did not get any videos/photos. Ashe trailered well, that's become a regular occurrence which is awesome. When we got there we settled in (He's been to this farm before) and then prepped for our first ride of the day: Dressage.

He and I have never done a Dressage test before, so we went over halting, saluting, etc. On the entry to the dressage portion of the ring (we had it sectioned off with poles) the train went by...

Now, we've been to this farm before. We've experienced the train on numerous occasions. No big deal right?

We spent the majority of the lesson bucking at every request to canter. He was a tight ball of energy, and thankfully I managed to stay on with every buck, hop and strike out that he performed. Some lovely lateral work though!

Eventually he calmed down enough we were able to complete the W/T/C test and it actually looked pretty decent other than the first canter departure and his free walk (which he never drops his head for).

After that we had a "trail obstacles" lesson for the group which he was PERFECT for. Even the new stuff he was very much BTDT.

Jumping was the second day and he was a wonder pony! I really wish that someone had caught our final course on video, it was the best thing ever and we jumped 2'9! So yeah, prefect end :)

2. Tying/Hosing/Clipping

We're slowly progressing in each of these areas :) Recently he allowed himself to be tied while I washed his tail outside. Additionally, I turned on the clippers and he didn't flinch or run away while I ran them around his body. We're still not letting them near his head, but slowly does it. Major win for everyone! Very proud of how far he has come with all these areas!

3. Riding

We're working on the usual: bending, listen to direction over jumps rather than just assuming we're going a certain way, keeping the shoulder up, etc. Thinking of having a few training rides for him to teach him contact while I'm learning it on my trainer's lesson horses.

That's... about it! Hopefully I will continue to update progress more frequently now that life has settled a bit. Halloween show is coming up and while I don't think we'll be doing a costume this year, I'm hoping for some fresh photographs and videos!Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-80383273562829567272015-06-20T06:48:00.003-07:002015-06-20T06:48:58.924-07:00Baths, Clinics and Exercises Oh My!So next weekend we have our first clinic! Our first OVERNIGHT two day clinic at my trainers. We'll be doing dressage and show jumping work. Two rides on Saturday and one on Sunday. So we're prepping and I'm taking notes of what we need to work on and things to ask.

We had our first big bath of the season. He's still panicky but we're getting better, much quicker to come back and much higher toleration of his fear of the hose. It still needs a lot of work but we're getting there.

I think his hind is permanently stained sometimes!

We're slowly getting back into shape, he jumped 2'3 red vertical from a really tight turn (he hesitated but went over) so I'm happy about that as it's approximately where we left off last year with his ability to turn.

We've come a long way with laterals and turning on the hind. He still pitches a fit on occasion, and doesn't entirely trust when we are near walls or barrels, but he doesn't run off when I reach down his shoulder anymore so progress there.

He still doesn't quite pick up right lead canter on cue if we're not in the ring. I'm still working out if it's based on his confusing of my aids, or if he just super prefers his left lead and is being obstinate. Something to work on at the clinic I think.

Beyond that we're just working on rhythm, response to aids and turning.

He still at times really want to take over for me, so we're working on a balance of "Okay I'm in charge.... okay now you make decisions (such as getting us over fences, etc)". It's a matter of building more trust with him I think. He's an extremely guarded horse, and it's taken two years to get this far, but we've come a really really long way. I've become an active rider and he's learning to trust his rider.Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-40288824164681898842015-05-31T08:51:00.000-07:002015-05-31T08:51:15.943-07:00Location Location LocationSo it's been a busy time for Ashe and I with the summer season coming upon us!

We've had two big steps forward!

The first:

I've not only managed to get his mane roached on my own accord, he even let me run the mini clippers up his neck to fix it up. Granted the initial cutting was with scissors, but the fact that he stood there while I buzzed up and down the sides and the top to even it out is a HUGE step forward. I'm almost ready to invest in a good pair of clippers to do his legs and mane from now on!

Still a bit rough but looking handsome!

The second:

You all know his fear of hoses. And the fact that we'll get some progress in and then suddenly he's pulling back and running away and generally making my life difficult and very wet.

Well after talking to his previous owner I found out that her lesson students would just cross tie him in the wash stall and hose him down despite his issues, I decided to give it a go. I'm not a huge fan of the new inside wash stall's location, just off the riding ring, but I figured it'd be worth a try.

<strike>Stinker</strike> Ashe stood there (eye's big as saucers) the entire time I hosed him down and not once did he bolt, spin around, etc. He also was not cross-tied because I was a bit nervous that he'd slip and fall if he panicked while tied. I'm going to try bathing him next in that area and I'll just have to make sure he's pretty dried off before heading into the ring sand.

Maybe I can use this as a baby step to getting him okay with bathing outside. Fingers crossed!
Riding lesson this past Friday was interesting. We have been working on flexibility and ease of turning, particularly at the canter.

My trainer decided to introduce rollbacks. The jumping kind. The kind where you go over a jump and two strides out turn towards the wall and change direction. Everything help you if you land on the wrong lead and your horse is stubborn that we go “THAT WAY”…

We started out with cross rails, but Ashe barely put any effort into them. They were more for me to get the feel of what I should be doing and to introduce him to the fact that “No, we are not turning away from the wall but into it”. After a bit we bumped it up to a good 2’ vertical and added cantering…

Getting him on his right lead canter is difficult enough, now you’re adding in jumping (butt weight in direction of turn) and then in two strides later (Look, Sit up, lift inside shoulder, lift and half halt inside hand, put on outside leg/knee) turning him sharply to the outside (encouraging him to lift with his back end to turn) all while making sure we’re changing leads. This boy has yet to do any sort of flying lead change on cue as well (He generally does them over jumps himself, but we have not attempted this yet on the flat).

Half the time he lead changed perfectly, half the time he did the front, but not the back. However we really got the pattern down (Him even turning in the right direction when I got my rights/lefts confused) focusing on right canter lead to left turn. My timing needs work, I’m still holding two point a little too long after the jump which affects how well he can bring himself back and under to turn. It also helped me to feel where my seat bone weight is and that should help us with cueing the canter as well J

He was a real trooper though! She gave me some specs to practice on my own. I hope to have a video clip of us doing this soon!

Before the winter hit, a barn mate brought out a saddle fitter for her new horse (A very broad backed Canadian breed). I was intrigued, because I knew the Wintec still didn’t fit right for either of us, and was hoping she’d might be able to help us out, without going the route of a custom saddle. While Terry does do custom Schleese, she was more than willing to work with Ashe and I.

Ashe made me so proud! He stood like a pro without being tied the entire time she was measuring and adjusting the tools on his back and around his belly. It wasn’t too long ago that he had bolted from a cloth measuring tape when I attempted to measure him for a blanket.

Such a handsome boy!

In the end she told me what I had thought, but hoped was wrong. The saddle didn’t fit, it was too long in the tree (he has a small saddle bearing area) and too tight for all around wither clearance. Apparently it’s not enough just to have 3 fingers between the top of wither to the gullet, but also enough clearance (3-4 fingers) on the side AND wide enough so it wasn't pushing on his spine. Along with this, the angle of the gullet needs to match the shoulders to allow for freedom of movement.

I was given a task: Finding a saddle with a short tree, for wide backed low wither horse with the right angle. The only saddle she could think to recommend for me to try was Thorowgood. Well I couldn’t buy a brand new saddle with my wintec sitting in my tack trunk so I took it to be sold (along with other tack that just ended up not fitting him. Seriously, this horse needs cob cheek pieces and an oversize browband…). Over the winter we worked on our ground work and laterals while I searched.

After asking on COTH, I contacted Hastilow and we found a “semi-warm” (aka about 28 degrees) day to test ride a saddle or two. They almost didn’t have anything for me, but at the last minute found what is now, my lovely new to me saddle J It’s a cob tree Thorowgood T8 jumping saddle in a 17inch seat. The flaps are short which I adore (I will always get short flaps now if I can! Yay for short inseams!) and my leg falls into the right spot effortlessly. Some new padding and an extra medium tree… and we were raring to go!

The only thing, because my boy has an almost abnormally short back, is that the back panel comes right to the edge of where a saddle should be. So before every right I pound back the fluff so that he has time to warm up before any pressure is put on that last rib. However the difference I have seen (AND FELT) in this saddle with my boy astounds me. He’s more willing to do his laterals, he’s picking up his right lead more easily and, now that I’m balanced, he’s more balanced as well.

If it wouldn’t be super expensive, I’d get someone to recut and shorten those back panels into a more “upswept” style. However since the saddle is all one piece, that's a bit unfeasible at the moment. But for what we do? It’s perfect. Fingers crossed that it continues to fits him as we muscle up for the summer.

Mostly because I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to write about everything that's happened!

Over the winter, our routine settles into exercising once or twice a week. We worked on ground work mostly and we have come a long way!

Long lining, we're not pulling near as much, and he's becoming much more steady at the canter. We've also been working on disengaging the hind, laterals and working from both sides on the ground.

Through all this he has had almost a 180 in attitude towards a lot of things. He's becoming calmer, and braver. We're working on the right side a lot, since that's both our weak sides. Hoping we can school cross country this year!

Along with this, we had a saddle fitter out, sold the wintec and got lucky with a used thorowgood jump saddle WHICH I LOVE. Short flaps, short tree... all around amazing to ride in!

It looks tiny! But he has a small back, and I'm a small rider! That's a 17" seat there!

He was amazing during the fitting, which I will go more into in the next post!

We've also made progress with the clippers, I can run them, while on, across his body. He's very unsure, but he has made progress with that. Hoping to bathe him tomorrow, we'll see what we need to work on with that.

All in All, despite minimum work this past winter coming into the spring, we've come a long way!!Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-20453500619651746232014-12-01T15:41:00.004-08:002014-12-01T15:41:23.566-08:00Thankful ThanksgivingWith the holidays coming up and the random snow storm.... plus I hate the cold... again haven't been riding much.

However we did have a longing lesson this past Saturday which was awesome. I learned a lot about the application of my knowledge and the trainer even said I could start teaching people if I wanted since I knew the concepts, even if my own technique wasn't quite down. Ashe had both good canter, and a bad canter (where he likes to run backwards away from me) so the trainer go to see all about him.

He and I are doing much better at the halt, walk and trot and are focusing on his balance and relaxation while on the longe line (he was super tense and I learned some great relaxation techniques for him!)

I'm a bit worried about his saddle fit, (The cantle seems to be getting rather tight/low on him) however with the car being in and out of the shop every week this past month it's completely destroyed any budget I had saved for an evaluation session.

However tonight I had one of the best bonding moments with him that I've had in a long while.

Ashe started rubbing his tail again (I have a feeling this is going to be a winter thing with him) due to buildup of dirt and dandruff. Tonight wasn't too bad temperature wise, and he was already soaked from being out in the rain like the goof he is.

While I didn't use the hose (I brought hot water in bottles from home), we had one of the BEST washing tail times that we've had. He stood for me, and then, of all things... he almost fell asleep! That's right ladies and gentlemen, my horse, the water monster, the hater of all things that try to clean him, fell asleep while tied in the wash stall and I even spied licking and chewing while he relaxed.

This relaxation continued while we walked with towels draped all over ourselves to keep warm.

The best part about it all, was when he was doing some free running in the arena (which with him it's more like "I'm gonna walk over here and just stand and sniff the ground and then look at you like you're stupid to think I'm actually going to play") I walked up to him and asked him to walk with me, no halter, no rope, nothing. AND HE DID.

The cherry on top was when we stopped and he put his nose into my face and sighed and just relaxed there, breathing on me, for a good minute.

My boy, the always tense, always alert, always on guard... completely relaxed tonight with me.

And that moment... that moment of just the two of us standing there together... that has made this entire journey worth it. And I'm so thankful to own this amazing handsome boy.

Let's see... I've had to deal with 3 weeks of antibiotics, an ear infection, and Ashe dealing with the leftovers of an abscess...

That said, we've slowly gotten back into work just in time for winter!

He's come a long way, we're doing out laterals almost straight now, and the fun show was perfect :) I've never seen him so relaxed away from home and our canter cues are becoming almost seamless.

We are also slowly re-introducing clippers and so far doing well.

Mom even rode him bareback the other day!

We're getting our balance down for the bounces, but trot poles are still a mass of limbs flying everywhere :P
Our wonderful Halloween Show costume and Egg on Spoon! He was my parrot (He hated the beak I made for him, it made his nose itch, so I went without).

So despite a major lapse in keeping up this blog, and riding off and on as best I can, we've done well :)

Here's to hoping we can keep it up this winter!Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-43632790390278065842014-07-31T13:38:00.002-07:002014-07-31T13:38:48.285-07:00Photo Shoot and Cross Country! So Sunday we had our professional Photo Shoot!
I think he did everything he could short of bucking/rearing...

Today was supposed to be an easy day. W/T warm up in the arena and then a trail ride as I was exhausted from work.

Ashe decided that was his invitation to protest that we were riding through dinner.

We refused to stand properly at the mounting block, we dropped our shoulder and ducked, we popped our shoulder and attempted to side pass out of the arena doors, we changed directions suddenly, we had a GORGEOUS canter departure which wasn't asked for and then refused to stop, every canter after that of course was mach 5 weight all in the front OH GOD WE AREN'T STOPPING/STEERING...

I rode him through all of it. I brought out the dressage whip (inside bend) and the crop (outside shoulder). Touched him with each twice to remind him that we behave.

In the end he relented, and I dropped the whip and crop. We trotted like a normal sane horse citizen and had a decent canter... after an hour and a half of fighting.

Then we had two meltdowns at the hose. One because I switched sides. One because the towel I was using to wipe off his muzzle suddenly wasn't in his view and became a terrifying monster. He also stepped on my foot.

Again I made him work through it. THEN I made him stand and wait for his grass. Which he, after a short lived protest, stood like a gentleman until I released him.

I have to wonder what it says about me that I'm more stubborn than he is.... And I'm sure he thinks that his mother is a monster now.Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-34781486948452247872014-07-19T09:26:00.001-07:002014-07-19T09:26:10.545-07:00HAPPY ONE YEAR / All Good Plans...I have had Ashe for one year. WOOO! It's hard to believe, but looking back he has come a long way in this time :) And so have I.

Celebration Time!

Today we had an awesome, but tiring, riding lesson today. While our jumping is solid, getting him to the fences, especially the turns, has been extremely shaky.

So for the next month we will be continuing our trot sets, and working on dressage.

Needless to say Ashe is not happy about this...

Today we worked on connection through the bit and lightening his front... which meant he had to WORK. And so did I. My legs are wobbly from all the inside leg to outside rein as he's trying to be Gumby and counter bend against me.

I won, mostly. (It's the little victories right?)

Ashe has this thing down at a walk. At the trot he refuses and resists. So we did a lot of trotting.

And I mean a lot of trotting.

However we had a few moments where we connected, and near the end he was starting to look for that connection (at this point my whole body was exhausted so I couldn't meet him some of the time) while in the trot as well.

The canter departures were messy but we had two PERFECT departures that were light and easy and soft. Which obviously was promptly lost as he pealed out of the circle counter bending.

Hopefully my plans will stay put, I won't get sick and he won't get hurt so we can continue to improve.

My reward? We get to go cross country schooling in August if we can finally have a connected trot and controllable canter. WOO!Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-61564057197701791292014-07-10T18:38:00.001-07:002014-07-10T18:44:24.170-07:00De-scaring the Terrifying Dressage WhipAshe has a problem with dressage whips (and lunge whips, crops, chains jingling, anything near his face, clippers (they don't have to be touching him), hoses (we're at 60/40 for freak outs), cloth measuring tapes...)...

Unfortunately he just isn't quite making the connection with some lateral movements, where a whip would be in handy to add pressure in what I want him to move. Also in aiding him becoming much more immediate off my leg at the canter cue.

So I pulled out my trusty dressage whip, wiped the dust off, and... proceeded to walk to my horse for half the ring because he was backing up because he KNEW I was holding it. When we were finally progressing forward again, we mounted and he shot off like a rocket. I didn't even touch him, just wiggled it as I was adjusting a stirrup and it was within his view.

Now I can be on the ground and rub it all over him. He flinches a little around his torso but relaxes his back leg and chews so I know he isn't THAT scared of it.

Finally we manage a decent walk and trot without explosions of forward movement from me just wiggling the thing. We attempt to canter, he just trots faster. I tap, and I mean just brush it backwards... and we're off at Mach 5 running laps around the arena. I let him work it out since I do want it to mean forward and we finally come back under control and I walk him out until he stops breathing like a dragon and we try again.

Less explosion but still running full forward with little steering and all half halts, seated or bit, are out the window.

I quit for the day as we're both sweaty and tired.

Let him rest for a day and come back out.

Well what do you know but we actually managed to walk up to, mount, w/t/AND canter like a normal sane horse with dressage whip in hand. We even had nice couple of turns on the forehand, and I was able to use it in his leg yields. Huzzah!

However, as always with Ashe... 50/50 he'll explode the next time I ride.

Bonus is that he did not have to be sedated for the dentist and had only two minor escape attempts. YAY!

And the next lesson my trainer is helping me groom him and we start working on the... Dreaded Clippers!!

Bonus: Video of us jumping 2'9!!
Bathing Success!I've spent the whole week getting Ashe ready for today.

Rinsing off, treating at the wash area, just standing around in the spot with the hose on...

Today, after a heavy ride, we tried for a bath...

And it was a success!

We had a few missteps, a few backups... but none of the panicked pulling, backing up or refusing to get back into his spot. We even loose tied to the fence at the end with no panic pulling when he backed up and felt the tension!

I'm so proud! And he's so soft and clean now!

A special thanks to the cereal Apple Jacks... your colorful little o's are the perfect bribery to keeping my boy well behaved and rewarded :)Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6173803470594910911.post-11934530701192073362014-06-21T10:23:00.000-07:002014-06-21T10:23:15.525-07:00Wait that ISN'T a snake?!Had a breakthrough yesterday :)

We had a hard ride and he ended up rather sweaty. It was still hot out and so I decided to give the hose session a try.

We did it! I rinsed every inch of him off :) Of course how we got there is half the fun....

First, we stood at the VEEEERY end of the lead rope. He was relaxed, just didn't want to get any closer.

I sprayed the hose, he startled but stayed where he was.

Sprayed it again, moved the water stream close to him. Flinching but still stayed put. Began spraying all over his legs, then his chest, then his body. He stood there enjoying himself but I couldn't get ANY closer.

I began laughing at him and decided to take the hose sprayer off. Before, hose sprayer on or off it didn't matter but we were making good progress.

Well wouldn't you know it he let me get right up next to him and spray him all over both sides! So proud!

Now of course the proof of any good scientific experiment is the ability to replicate it... we'll see how it goes!Finding Serenityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13401576308512551545noreply@blogger.com0
